How it works

Three things a puppy is missing on the first night.

Three signals the litter provided, replaced.

Close-up of the heartbeat unit in the plush's chest pocket
1

A heartbeat they recognise

A soft pulse, roughly the rhythm of a sleeping littermate.

The plush on a neutral surface, showing its size and weighted body
2

Warmth that lasts the night

A reusable heat pack that holds temperature for hours.

A puppy curled asleep against the plush
3

Something to curl into

Weighted, washable, sized for a crate.

Designed to help settle. Not a medical device and not a cure — many owners find it takes the edge off the first few nights.

The honest comparison

Wouldn't a normal stuffed toy do?

Partly, yes — a plush gives a puppy something soft. It just doesn't replace the two things a puppy actually lost when it left the litter.

Questions

Everything people ask before they buy one.

The ones people actually ask at 2 a.m.

Does a heartbeat toy actually help a puppy sleep?

It's designed to help a puppy settle, not to sedate one. The pulse sits at roughly the rhythm of a sleeping littermate, and the warmth replaces the heat of the pile your puppy slept in until today. Many owners find it takes the edge off the crying, especially alongside a consistent crate routine. It isn't a guarantee, and it isn't a medical device.

Why does a puppy cry on its first night in a crate?

Until today your puppy slept pressed against littermates, with warmth, movement and a heartbeat on every side. The first night alone removes all three at once, in an unfamiliar room. The crying is separation distress, not defiance or bad behaviour. It usually eases over the first week as the crate starts to feel like a safe place rather than an exile.

Are batteries included?

No. Every one of these needs AAA batteries for the heartbeat and they are not supplied — the puppy and kitten plushes take two, and the original tan dog takes three. It's worth having a pack in the house before the first night, because that is exactly the evening you won't want to be hunting for them.

Does it come with a heat pack?

The tan dog, the bear, the lamb and the kitten each come with a warmth pack as well as the heartbeat. On the bear and the lamb it is a microwave-safe pack you reheat; stand a cup of water next to it in the microwave. Check the individual product page for what that item ships with before you order.

Is it safe to leave in the crate overnight?

It's built for overnight crate use, but supervise your puppy for the first few nights so you know how they treat it. It is not a chew toy — remove it if your puppy is actively tearing at it. The AAA batteries and the warmth pack are swallowing hazards, so check the seams and the battery compartment regularly.

Is it washable?

Yes. Remove the heartbeat unit and the warmth pack first — both come out through a closure in the back — then machine wash cold and tumble dry low. Never wash the electronic components. Washing every week or two is sensible for something a puppy sleeps against every single night.

What if my puppy chews it?

Light mouthing is normal and expected; puppies explore with their mouths. It isn't indestructible and it isn't a chew toy, so supervise and remove it if your puppy is working at a seam. If a seam does open, take it out of the crate straight away — loose stuffing, batteries and the warmth pack are all swallowing hazards.

How long does the heartbeat last?

The heartbeat unit runs on AAA batteries, which you supply. On the bear and the lamb it shuts off automatically after eight hours and is restarted by hand. The warmth pack is reusable and holds heat for several hours per activation — long enough to cover the hardest stretch of the night, rather than through to morning.

What size crate does it fit?

The bear and the lamb are both about fifteen inches long, so they suit standard puppy crates and most breeds up to medium size. They're meant to sit beside your puppy as something to curl against, not to fill the crate. Your puppy should still be able to stand up, turn around and lie flat with it in there.

When should I introduce it?

The first night home is the point of it, so unbox it before bedtime rather than at 2 a.m. Let your puppy sniff it while they're awake and calm, warm the pack shortly before crating, and put it in at lights-out so it's already warm and pulsing when the room goes quiet.

How is this different from a plain stuffed toy?

A plain plush gives a puppy something soft, which helps a little. This adds the two signals a stuffed toy can't: a pulse at roughly the rhythm of a sleeping littermate, and steady warmth from a reusable pack. Those are the parts of the litter pile a puppy actually misses on the first night.

Can I use it with an older dog or a rescue?

Yes. It's built around the first nights of a puppy, but the same two signals — warmth and a slow pulse — are often used to help a newly adopted adult dog settle into an unfamiliar home. Supervise the same way you would with a puppy, especially with a dog you don't yet know well.
